The Car Ride That Changed Our Lives

In April we went to Kansas to visit Ty’s family for Easter.  I had the feeling I was ready to start a family, but hadn’t brought the idea up in conversation with Ty yet.  It seemed early and I was surprised that I felt the way I did.  After we got married we told everyone it would be 3-5 years before we had kids, but here we were 9 months later and my heart was yearning for a baby.

Ty’s mom wanted to make a time capsule to bury and dig up in ten years.  She had asked each of us to write out where we thought we’d be in ten years to put in the time capsule.  Ty and I started working on ours.  It got us talking about how many children we wanted and what the time frame was for starting a family.  We had talked about having a family before and we knew it was in the plans for us.  The time capsule letter got the ball rolling on the conversation of when.

The next day, April 8th, we had a four hour car ride back home to Oklahoma.  I brought the subject up again and we started talking about it in more detail.  When I told Ty I felt like I was ready to have a baby soon, I was shocked when he said he was too.  Since I’m a teacher we figured a May baby would be the way to go.  We counted out the months and decided we would want to be pregnant around September (I guess we did our math wrong).  We figured it would take us 3-4 months to get pregnant, so we should start trying in June or so.

While we were talking the alarm on my phone went off, reminding me to take my birth control.  I realized it was the last day in my pack (it was just meant to be).  I told Ty and asked him if maybe I should just not get another pack.  We decided that we wouldn’t pay for another pack because most articles I read said it would take a few months after you stop taking birth control for your body to get back on a regular cycle.  We figured we would just be careful for a couple months.

That night when we got home I got out a notebook to write down my thoughts and feelings.  Reading back over them now is funny because I wrote “I am so excited I just want to start trying right now!  I just hope we are able to get pregnant and don’t have any complications or miscarriages, although I’m okay with adoption.”  We went to Wal-Mart and bought prenatal vitamins because I read it was best to take them for a few months before even conceiving.  We also got a package of pregnancy tests.  Ty thought it was silly, but I explained to him that when the day came I didn’t want to have to go out and buy one.  I’m so glad we made that decision!

More to come on the day we found out we were pregnant!

  1. My husband was in grad school when we got married, we thought we would wait at least the 2 years until he graduated to get pregnant, but 5 months later, we started trying! The Grace of marriage has the tendency to change hearts!
