This morning Carter and I were playing and my feet were cold. I popped into the bedroom to grab my slippers and when I stepped back through the doorway I saw Carter standing on the bottom rung of the ladder. Naturally I panicked initially but then noticed how steady he was and what a great job he was doing. I got close and spotted him with my hand hovering either behind or next to him as he climbed up to the 2nd rung. After sitting on the 2nd rung for a while I pulled him down and we went off to play some more, but he just kept crawling back over to the ladder wanting to climb it again.
This is what I saw when I returned to the hallway.
Time after time he climbed onto the bottom rung and then up to the 2nd rung. He did it so many times I started to calm down a bit and my heart wasn't beating quite as furiously. It was as if he knew I had pulled back my guard a bit because he decided to go for the 3rd rung. As he tried to pull up onto the 3rd rung he slipped and hung from the rung by his arm pits. After that I was scared again and decided no more filming his ladder climbing until daddy came home so we would have more hands on deck.
Just hanging out on the 2nd rung.
Carter continued to go up and down the ladder, but I was right there hovering over him again. Kids learn fast though because he didn't go for the 3rd rung again. When he made it to the 2nd rung he would stare up at the 3rd rung and fuss, hoping someone would help him up to the next rung. He even started getting up onto the bottom rung and staring up at the 2nd rung fussing. I'm hoping that means we won't have to worry about him attempting to climb up to the 3rd rung again. Ty should be done in the attic soon, so I won't have to worry for much longer.
Today was another moment when I wondered how in the world my parents dealt with me as a child! When I was 2 years old my dad left a ladder up leading to the roof and I decided to climb all the way up and sit on the peak of the roof. Eeek, not sure how my parents didn't drop dead from heart failure. They are very brave! I'm sure they both got their first gray hair that day!!! And here I am worrying about Carter sitting about 2 feet from the ground!
I love to hear him breath when he's working so hard. In the red pants it looks like he hates to put his bare foot on the ladder, and if he'd had both shoes he might have been gone. And, ... when you climbed up the ladder we're not sure how you even got out of the house. Thank heavens you knew enough to sit still and call for Mom instead of trying to get down.

ReplyDeleteSo I pulled a Hayden. Or we'll blame Jeremy, he probably let me out!
DeleteI also love hearing his breathing! And boy can one see the wheels turning in that brain, thinking, thinking!!
ReplyDeleteHe sure figures things out! I definitely see Ty in him there. He looks at something and processes it until he figures it out!
