2016 Running Review

My friend Sara wrote a review post on her running in 2016. When I read her post, you can read it here, I got excited to do something similar myself. I loved the excuse to look back over the year and see how far I have come from 2015! The year 2016 was my most exciting year of running since I graduated college and ran my last cross country race. I have run times I didn't think were possible for me anymore and I have a strong desire to continue improving and to make 2017 an even better and more PR filled year than 2016! I have Sara to thank for making me realize being a om and being in my 30's doesn't mean that my fastest times have to be behind me. I am so excited about that! I had a few runs in 2016 where I ran with my phone instead of my Garmin or my Garmin died part-way through a run but I still want to include my year's information from Garmin Connect:

Total Miles Run: 1,332.6
Total Time Spent Running: 191 hours, 33 minutes, and 32 seconds
Feet of Elevation Gained: 21,529
Average Running Speed: 7 mph or 8:34 minute per mile pace.

The Year's Stats:
Number of 5ks Run: 15
Number of 10ks Run: 4
Number of 15ks Run: 1 (First time at that distance!)
Number of Half Marathons Run: 1

Times Under 22 Minutes in the 5k: 15
Times Under 21 Minutes in the 5k: 9
Times Under 20 Minutes in the 5k: 3

Number of Races Where I Ate While Running: 1 (This was a first for me!)
Number of Races Where I Drank Alcohol While Running: 1 (This was a first for me!)
Number of Trail Races: 1 (This was a first for me!)
Number of Postpartum PRs: 4 (5k, 10k, 15k, and half-marathon)
Number of All-Time PRs: 2 (10k and 15k)
Number of Races Run While Pregnant: 0!!!! (Thank goodness!)

Weeks With 20-29 Miles: 24
Weeks With 30-39 Miles: 11
Weeks With 40-49 Miles: 7
Weeks With 50 Miles: 2
This shows most of my weeks were at least 20 miles. It also shows that I can definitely up the ante and run more miles per week to get faster and stronger!

For comparison, 2015 Stats:
Number of 5ks Run: 13
Number of 10ks Run: 0
Number of 15ks Run: 0
Number of Half Marathons Run: 2

Times Under 22 Minutes in the 5k: 5
Times Under 21 Minutes in the 5k: 2
Times Under 20 Minutes in the 5k: 0

Number of All-Time PRs: 0
Number of Races Run While Pregnant: 3

Weeks With 20-29 Miles: 13
Weeks With 30-39 Miles: 0
Weeks With 40-49 Miles: 0
Weeks With 50 Miles: 0
This shows the majority of my weeks were less than 20 miles. Coming back after pregnancy and childbirth can be tough!

It's cool to see that in 2015 I was trying to break 21 minutes in the 5k and I was able to do that 9 times over the course of 2016. I am so proud of my all-time PRs in the 10k and 15k (although it was the first 15k I've ever run) and only missing out on an all-time PR in the half-marathon by 14 seconds! Here are my 2016 races broken down by month. I think the biggest thing I learned this year was not to overbook myself with races no matter how much fun they sound or how desperate I am at a PR attempt! I've included my average pace for the race because some races were short and others were long, that way there's a bit of comparison.

  1. Pretty interesting! The St Patricks race in Joplin has a 5k and a 15k. I was surprised at that. Some good pictures!!

  2. This is great! You had a ton of overall wins!! I like how you included your paces for each race; I'll steal that in 2017 if I can remember. ;-) I also have no doubt that you can top this in 2017. I am also glad that my blog has helped you know that you can do it - sometimes I feel silly writing it, as it's really just another way to obsess about running, haha! Cheers to 2017!

    1. Okay, I stole your pace idea for my 2016 post...I'm starting my long run at noon due to the extreme cold today so it seemed like a fun activity to kill the time beforehand! :-)

    2. I also get workout ideas from your blog! I'm sure there are lots of other people it helps as well!

That's awesome. It was neat for me to see the difference in pace between months as I got faster through the training cycle. I'll have to look at yours again.

    3. I hope so! I sure enjoy reading other female runner's blogs, especially those who balance training with motherhood and work.

I enjoyed looking at the paces when I did it; it does make you appreciate how far you can come during a training cycle, eh?
