Winter Reading

Now that I have more time to get caught up on things like my blog, I'm finding partially finished blog posts to finish up and post. One of them being our winter book list. This list has quite a few series listed and not as many specific books. Carter is getting to where he's more interested in series and is reading more chapter books. It's so much fun to see how our reading life as a family has changed over the years as the kids grow. Carter is at such a fun age for reading right now!

Our Favorite Winter Reads:
  • Does it Fart? by Nick Caruso and Dani Rabaiotti- When I saw this on the new nonfiction shelf at the library, I knew it would be a hit. The kids loved it and laughed quite a bit when we read it. I learned a few things too which was fun.
  • Little Frog's Tadpole Trouble by Tatyana Feeney- Elise loved this book and wanted to read it over and over. The tadpole's parents have a bunch of babies and at first he's jealous of all the attention his parents give the babies but then he loves playing with them as they get older. I think Elise mostly liked it because there were so many babies in it. She loves babies!
  • Pig the Pug books by Aaron Blabey- Carter got almost all the books in this series for Christmas from Oma and Opa. The kids love these books and Elise had me reading them over and over. They are so funny!
  • Narwhal and Jelly series by Ben Clanton- My parents got the first book in this series for Carter last school year during our spring book fair. He read it at the time and liked it. Then we got him a pack from a book order with the rest of the books for Christmas. He loved them and re-read the book from last year. We also got him Narval in Spanish. When Narwhal's Otter Friend came out, Elise was super excited! They got really into the books and were loving them. Then we watched a Facebook live with Ben Clanton where the kids learned to draw the characters and they were hooked. Carter has re-read all the books multiple times and even asks to have waffles after reading the books.
  • The Pigeon books by Mo Willems- After Carter chose to dress as the Pigeon for book character day, Elise got really into The Pigeon Books again.
  • The Bad Guys series by Aaron Blabey- Carter got really into these books and picked a couple at our book fair. I later got him the entire series from a Scholastic Book Order. He read them all really quickly and even finished 2 of them in one morning!
  • The Great Fuzz Frenzy- I found this book at Goodwill and got it for the kids because my students always liked this book. Carter loved it and picked it as our bedtime read aloud quite a few times.
  • Nursery Rhyme Board Book Set by Trace Moroney- This is a set of books we've had since Carter was a baby. It has Pat-a-Cake, Row Your Boat, Three Little Kittens, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Hickory Dickory Dock, and Teddy Bear Teddy Bear. They were Elise's favorite books for a long time. She loved them because she knew the rhymes and was able to read them on her own. She'd get the books out and read them to me or Tesla or herself. She still loves them quite a bit. That's when I realized I hadn't read her as many nursery rhymes as I did for Carter. When we started homeschooling in March, as part of our calendar time we read a nursery rhyme each morning.
  • Step Into Reading books- Our library has a special section in the children's area with all the Step Into Reading books. Elise loves them. She keeps checking out The Lion King, Shimmer and Shine books, Paw Patrol books, and John Cena Elbow Grease books. I don't particularly like these books. There's not much storyline and they are kind of boring, but she loves them. If it gets her excited to read, that's all I care about! It is a bit ridiculous when we go to the library and she ends up with a stack of 15 different Step Into Reading books.

  1. It's wonderful that they like to read. Such a wealth of life opens to them. And people who read are more empathetic. :)
