Christmas Eve

Our Christmas fun began Monday evening when my parents and brother arrived.  They got to our house a little bit before Ty did and then we all headed out to look at Christmas lights.  Carter enjoyed them just as much as the last time.  His eyes got big and he just stared and smiled at all of the lights.  We went out to dinner after looking at lights and Carter ended up going to bed a little bit late, but he did really well.

Ty had to work a half-day on Christmas Eve so we went up to his work 30 minutes before he got off and he gave us a tour.  We headed to lunch at Panera afterward and Carter chowed down on the food we brought for him.  From there Ty and my brother, Thomas, went off for some last minute Christmas shopping while the rest of us hung out at home.  I was shocked hours later that they still were not home.  Four hours later they came in with quite the stories.  Ty said it took them 20 minutes just to get out of the Wal-Mart parking lot and they had seen a few broken car windows in different parking lots.  I don't know which I would dislike more, Black Friday shopping or shopping on Christmas Eve!  After all the excitement of Christmas Eve shopping Thomas and Ty opted to stay home while the rest of us headed out to the trails.  Jeremy and I ran while my parents walked with Carter.  Jeremy and I decided to get festive with our running attire.
Standing by a Christmas tree at the trails before our run.

I was getting ready to shower after our run when the doorbell rang.  We were so excited to see it was Santa Claus!  One of our neighbors dresses up as Santa for a nearby community center.  Ty ran into him at the store and mentioned we hadn't gotten to see Santa because the lines were always hours long.  Our neighbor generously offered to stop by for a few pictures with Carter!  Carter was a bit tired and hungry, so he wasn't too pleased, but he got his first picture with Santa!

His face as he looked over and saw Santa cracked me up!

We finally got him to give us a small smile!
We enjoyed a Christmas Eve dinner of ham with delicious sides and then it was time for Carter to go to bed.  After he was asleep my parents put together the Laugh & Learn Learning Home Playset they had gotten Carter and put it by the Christmas tree so he could play with it in the morning.  Thomas also put together the basketball hoop he got Carter and set it out by the tree.  I was getting very excited and feeling festive!  I kept imagining Carter playing with his toys and ripping open his presents!  It was hard to fall asleep while picturing all of the fun to come in the morning!  Our Christmas Day recap coming soon!
Ready for Christmas Eve dinner.  Carter LOVES the light that flashes when we use the timer.

A Letter to Carter at 12 Months

My dear, little baby boy, you are now 12 months old!  Should I be referring to you as a toddler rather than a baby?  Maybe.  But you aren't technically toddling around on your own yet, so I'm holding on to that baby label for as long as possible!  This month has been an absolute blast!  You are just so much fun and sweet and adorable.  Just a few days after you turned 11 months old you started crawling.  Now you are all over the place and your little knees are red all the time and look rug burned or calloused due to all your crawling.

It's hard to believe you've only been crawling for a month because you are FAST!  It still amazes me when I pop into a room for a quick moment and you make it all the way down the hall, into the kitchen, and are about to get your hand in Harper's water bowl before I get to you.  I think that's your favorite thing to do when you know I'm not looking.  I've even seen you look over to see that I'm not in the room and then hightail it to her water bowl.  You are a mess, little one!  You are now pointing at things and babbling.  Skippy is your favorite thing to point at.  You are also waving more now.  You usually wave good bye to daddy in the morning, but rarely do it for me when I drop you off at daycare.  The first time you waved good bye was to Uncie Jeremy.  One of your favorite things to do is to put your hand over your mouth when talking to make a wa-wa sound.  It's so funny!

It's so sweet how you follow me around from room to room if I am doing chores.  There have been a few times when you were busy playing in your room so I ran to the laundry room really quickly to do some laundry.  Then I would hear you crying as you crawled around looking for me.  I now always try to make sure you see where I go so you don't have to crawl around trying to find me.  You have become a bit more of a momma's boy this month.  In the evenings when we get home you will crawl around and play and then crawl over to me and lay your head in my lap for a while, then go off to play again.  You also tend to prefer to be held by me, especially if you are in a big group, around people you don't know, are tired, or are hungry.  That made your birthday party a little bit tricky, but you did really well that day!

You are now cruising quite a bit.  Not on the furniture, but holding onto someone's hands.  You love to walk around the house or even just stand and check things out.  You are so cute about it too.  You will go up to someone and start reaching for their hands.  Sometimes we try letting go with one hand and you will reach around searching for our other hand.  Every once in a while you let go of my hands as if you're going to walk on your own, then you freak out and grab my hands again.  When I'm sitting on the floor and I come over to you and hold my hands out, you grab a hold and stand right up.  You really started doing it a couple weeks ago and now do it all the time!  You will pull up onto your knees, but haven't pulled up onto your feet quite yet.  I'm sure that is coming soon!  You pull up onto your knees in your crib sometimes and pulled up onto your feet once, so we lowered your crib.

Talking is about the same as last month.  You are still making lots of sounds, but aren't saying words much.  You say mama and dada sometimes, but it's not an every day occurence.  You like to point at Skippy and say ki, ki ca, or cacaca.  You copy cat sounds all the time!  If you hear me say something, you try to copy it.  Last night I said hi to your daddy while holding you and you said what sounded just like hi after I said it.  Daddy tried to get you to repeat it, but you wouldn't say it again.
Saying kica to Skippy.

Playing with doors is still a favorite game.  You have slammed your fingers in the door a couple of times now which just breaks my heart.  You love opening the cabinet in the bathroom and pulling everything out.  I swear I put it all back in at least 3 times a day!  One of your favorite ways to play is to lay in the doorway.  You push the door closed and then open it again.  Then you'll crawl toward the wall to play with the door stopper.  Then it's back over to the door to swing it open and closed.  You entertain yourself this way every morning as I get dressed.

You love the car you got from your Great Aunt Judy and Great Uncle Mike.  One side has a door that opens and the other side doesn't.  For some reason you have decided it's fun to climb over the side without a door.  Yesterday I walked into the other room to throw something away and heard you scream, so I ran back into the living room.  You were hanging over the side of the car with your head awkwardly smashed on the floor, stuck.  If only I knew what went through your precious, little head!  Your other favorite toys are these plastic fruit cups.  Your Great Papa eats the fruit cups and saves them for you.  Normally I can only build a tower with about 3 cups before you tear them down.  One day you were so busy playing you didn't notice the giant tower I built.  When you looked over, your eyes got big, and you immediately leaned forward to knock it over.  I was able to do it again and get your reaction on video.  Your eyes didn't get quite as big, but it was still adorable!

Driving in the car you like to play with me.  You'll pull your blanket up over your face until I say, "Where's Carter" and then you quickly pull the blanket down.  You've also realized you can see me in the rear view mirror and love to look up into your mirror at me.  When we are stopped at stop lights, I like to whip around and say boo at you into your mirror and you think it's hilarious.  You've also started jabbering and making lots of noise when you hear me on the phone.  I'm sure that will only get worse as you get over!

When I drop you off at daycare in the morning you take off crawling the moment you touch the ground.  I don't think you ever slow down either.  You love it!  When I get there to pick you up there is always a giant mess and I know it's all your mess because you are the only one in your room who can crawl.  Ms. Tracie says you like to crawl over to the toy shelves, pull all the toys off, not play with any of them, and go on to the next shelf.  That doesn't surprise me because you do the same thing with your toy box at home.  You still love playing with your buddy Abbygail and you love seeing Jasmine when you play with the kids in the one-year-old room.  Your first official day in the one-year-old room will be January 16th.  You are also eating more food offered by the daycare.  One day you at your afternoon snack in the one-year-old room.  They had applesauce and everyone ate one container, except for you.  You screamed after you had your container, so they fed you 2.

It amazes me how much you eat.  I swear every night as I put food on your tray I think in my head, that is way too much food.  But then you eat it all!  Every morning when you eat your oatmeal I give you your spoon.  Most days you take your spoon and immediately throw it on the floor.  Sometimes you eat a few bites off your spoon, throw it on the floor, and then refuse to use it anymore.  This morning you actually ate your whole meal using your spoon.  You still threw it on the floor multiple times, but would take it again after I washed it off.  Next up will be learning how to fill your spoon!

You have mastered the sippy cup.  It's so cute to watch you eat.  Partway through your meal you will reach over, grab your sippy, and chug it down.  You've had water, breast milk, and apple juice mixed with mostly water out of your sippy.  You haven't tried cow's milk yet because we still have frozen breast milk to use.  You are pretty much all the way weaned from nursing.  It was so easy because you were ready.  It also helped that you were used to drinking milk out of bottles at daycare.  We went from 2 bottles and one nursing session at daycare (morning snack, me nursing you at lunch, and afternoon snack) to one bottle (afternoon snack) and one nursing session at lunch.  Then you went to water at both snack times and me nursing you at lunch.  After a while I would come at lunchtime to nurse you and you were asleep.  It worked best for you to sleep at that time because it's when all the other kids nap and if you nap later, you don't nap as long because they are up playing and making noise.  So I stopped coming at lunch.  It was so hard and I missed you so much, but I knew it was the best thing for you.  So then you were getting a bottle at lunch and water at both snacks.  I was still nursing you after breakfast and before bedtime.  One day I forgot to nurse you at breakfast and you didn't even notice, so we took away the breakfast nursing session and only had the bedtime one left.  I've only been nursing you at bedtime every other day to ease myself out of it and then you will be fully weaned.

Speaking of nighttime, you have been sleeping through the night all month!  You go down around 8:00 and sleep until 6:00 or 7:00 every morning!  You've had a couple nights where you fuss a little in the middle of the night and then go back to sleep.  Watching you on the monitor, I'm not even sure if you wake up when you fuss.  You may just be doing it in your sleep.  You go down so easily now!  We'll lay you down and leave the room.  Typically you don't cry at all, but some days you cry for a couple of minutes.  Then you situate yourself and go to sleep.  I love watching you on the monitor.  Sometimes you sit up in your crib for a while.  Other times you crawl to a different spot in your crib before laying down and going to sleep.  While often times you stay where we lay you down and just go right to sleep.

You've popped out another tooth.  Now you have 4 top teeth and 2 bottom teeth.  I can see white through your gums, so I'm sure you will have more teeth coming through this month.  As you've gotten older teething has gotten easier.  It doesn't effect your sleep as much as it used to.  It shows itself more in the fact that you like to bite things.  You bite your toys, my clothes, my skin, my hair.  You've also been caught grinding your teeth on Christmas ornaments and decorations.  One made such a horrible sound it haunts me at random times in the day and causes me to break out in goose bumps!

When you are at home you get tired about 2 hours after you wake up and take a little 20-30 minute cat nap in the morning.  Then you take a longer 2-2.5 hour nap in the afternoon after lunch.  At daycare you skip your morning nap and just take a 1.5-2 hour nap in the afternoon after lunch.  Sometimes you take a little 30 minute nap after I pick you up while we are running.  You play so hard at daycare you are just exhausted when you get home!

You have tried lots of new foods this month.  You are quite the eater!  I love that we can feed you the same thing we are eating for dinner!  New foods you've tried this month are: flax seed (in your oatmeal), cherries, cranberries, white potatoes, peppers (red, yellow, and green), kidney beans, beef, mozzarella cheese, pasta, strawberries, spinach, tomato paste, and chicken and rice at daycare.

It's hard to believe with all that eating your weight is only in the 15th percentile, weighing in at 20.3 pounds!  Your height puts you in the 62nd percentile at 30.2 inches long.  Your head continues to bump up in percentile as it is now in the 83rd percentile at 18.8 inches.  You fit perfectly into 12 month clothes although you are also wearing your 18 month clothes.  Some of your 18 month onesies are a bit big in he neck hole and some of your 18 month pants are a bit big in the waist, but for the most part they fit pretty well.  You still fit into your size 3 diapers and size 3 shoes.

We had so much fun celebrating your 1st birthday with you and all of our family.  We are looking forward to celebrating Christmas with you as well.  You are such a fun child, so easy going and happy!  You are a joy to be around and I treasure all of the little moments I get to spend with you.  Thank you for making my life infinitely more fun and full of love.  I love you so much, big boy!

Now on to daddy:

It is hard to imagine that one whole year has passed since you were born. You have changed so much but are still the same.  It is hard to explain. Watching you for the past year has been one of the best years of my life.

We had so much fun at your birthday party. All of your family and some friends were there to help celebrate with you and you absolutely loved all of the company. You got several great toys and a lot of good photos to remember it by.

Since then we have been getting ready for your SECOND Christmas! You were so small for that Christmas it's so amazing to see you crawling so much and almost walking. It will be so much fun to see you tear into your presents!
Your first Christmas last year at 11 days old.

It has been an amazing first year, son, and I cannot wait for many more. Watching you grow and learn is truly amazing. Some of your favorite things have been reading, crawling, and being with your mommy! You love to pull books out on your own and just start reading. Sometimes you even tell the story, we just cannot understand you yet!

Still loving your runs with momma which is good because I do not ever think that she will get tired of them. We got you a rain/wind cover so that it is not so cold for you in the winter. This should allow for running year round since it looks like we will be getting a real winter this year. We were able to get some sledding in this year which was a blast. Now we just need to find a good hill to send you down!

I love you so much buddy!

Carter's 12 Month Appointment

Whew, that was tough!  This morning was Carter's 12 month doctor's appointment.  When I messaged the doctor earlier this month about Carter's possible egg allergy he said to avoid eggs and we'd talk about it more at his 12 month appointment.  So today I brought it up and he said they'd do an allergy test.  It wasn't until the nurse came in that I realized the allergy test was a blood draw.  They had a little needle attached to a tube which sucked the blood into a vial.  The nurse pulled Carter to the end of the table so his legs hung over and I pinned his legs against the table.  She pricked him and drew blood as the other nurse held his arm down and I held his other hand and rubbed his belly.
Still upset when we got home.  He has bruises on his arms.

Carter does really well with shots.  I hold his hand and calmly talk to him and he watches my face so I make sure I smile at him.  The blood draw was a totally different story.  He screamed and scrunched his eyes up as big, fat tears welled up and rolled down his cheeks.  I kept saying over and over in my head, "don't cry, don't cry, don't cry" as I talked sweetly to my little boy.  It was all I could do not to reach down and pull my poor, little baby up into my arms.  I looked over at his arm only to notice a very minimal amount of blood going through the tube and nothing in the vial which made me anxious because I didn't want Carter to have to go through the blood draw much longer.

The nurse finally gave up and said we needed to switch arms.  I immediately grabbed Carter up in my arms, rubbed his back, and spoke softly into his ear.  He finally started to calm down and sucked big gulps of air as he nuzzled into me.  When she was ready to try with the other arm I couldn't bear the thought of setting him back down on the table.  The moment I did he began to scream again.  This time he had his head toward the end of the table so I had to hold his legs down with my hand which was heartbreaking.  I could no longer rub his belly, so I just held his hand and spoke calmly to him.  I eventually had to stop talking because I knew if I opened my mouth, I wouldn't be able to hold the tears in any longer.  Finally they had enough blood and we were finished with the allergy test.

It was now time for his 12 month shots.  My sweet, little boy who barely makes a peep when he gets a shot was already screaming as I set him back down for his shots.  At this point I was very upset and tense from restraining my poor baby and trying not to cry myself.  When he got the first shot his entire face turned red as he arched his back and screamed louder than I have ever heard him scream before.  All the tension had to be released from my body somehow and the strangest thing happened, I started laughing.  It was so weird.  I was one of those people I never quite understood.  You know, those people who laugh at funerals or during the really sad part of a movie.  Like one of my best friends who laughed at the end of The Notebook.  The kind of laugh that I could tell was more of a nervous, I don't know how to react laugh.  I'm not sure what would have been better.  To allow myself to cry or to awkwardly laugh as my son cried.  I could tell the nurse was also feeling stressed and awkward and giggled a little once I started laughing.
Lucky for Carter his Uncie Tommy, Grammy, and Grampy all came to visit today!

Sitting here writing about this 2 hours later, I am still a bit on edge.  There is nothing that can compare to having to hear your child cry.  Especially when you are part of the reason why they are crying.  One time Carter started crying when Ty was standing right next to him.  My response was so immediate and without thinking, that I ran over and bent to pick Carter up at the same time as Ty and we ended up bumping heads.  Ty was a little bit offended, saying, "I was right there, why couldn't you let me pick him up?"  Why?  Because my immediate reaction is to go straight to him when he's crying and make the crying stop.  Now I understand that is not always the best thing for him and I do let him cry in situations where he doesn't want to be put down and is just being a little bit of a stinker.  But when my baby is in pain, you better believe his momma comes running.  So to stand there and watch him red-faced with tears running down his face, that was torture.  But the good news is that we should get the results from his allergy test back later this week and as for the shots, he will be less likely to get sick and to get others sick.  I just read a really interesting blog post about vaccinating children which made me even more grateful for the ability to protect Carter.

After going through the blood draw with Carter I respect parents whose children undergo surgeries at a young age even more.  Situations like that are arguably more traumatic for the parent than for the child.  Ty had multiple surgeries as a child and his parents still recount stories like it was yesterday.  The pain of seeing your child hurting is always fresh in a parent's mind.  I know there are more moments like today to come in my life as a parent, but I'm very thankful that I have this one behind me!  Now that I have all of Carter's 12 month stats, I will be posting his 12 month post soon.  Hopefully tomorrow, but we'll see since it will be Christmas Eve and all!

Full of Holiday Cheer Over Here!

Friday we had our classroom parties at school.  The teachers in my hallway all wore Christmas sweaters and I felt compelled for Carter to join in on the fun.  So he went off to daycare dressed in his elf jammies and looked so adorable!  Our classroom party was so much fun.  The room parents plan the parties and we just help manage the crowd.  They had the movie "The Polar Express" on while students wrapped the Christmas presents they had made for their parents and then came around with hot chocolate and cookies.  It was very laid back and enjoyable.

When I picked Carter up from daycare I was surprised by an adorable gift bag he had decorated with handmade presents inside.  They had made ornaments with fingerprints turned into reindeer, a hot chocolate mix for Santa with fabric over the top decorated by Carter's handprint decorated as Santa, and reindeer food.  It was all so cute!

My work Christmas party was Friday evening at 5:00.  I picked Carter up a little after 4:00 and debated what to do for that short period of time.  I knew if I headed home I'd only have time to unpack my car and play for 10 minutes or less before leaving again.  I was so excited when I came up with the idea to go to the aquarium which was only a few minutes away.  We went to the aquarium and walked around for 30 minutes before heading out for the party.  I took Carter to the party with me and then Ty stopped by on his way home from work to pick him up.  Carter got lots of attention and love in the 20 minutes he was there.  The hostess made a photo booth area like we had at Carter's birthday party equipped with holiday-themed props.  I was a little hesitant to go to the party because I didn't want to be away from Carter, but I was so glad I went.  It was a blast and I had lots of fun and snuggle time with Carter at the aquarium which made me not miss him quite as much.

The message on my cup cracked me up, "If you've been naughty, we want details!"
Yesterday we had an ice storm which covered every blade of grass with ice and resulted in a down power line in our backyard and branches across my brother's driveway, blocking him from getting his car out of the garage.  Ty was more than happy to layer up in clothes and head over to Jeremy's house with his hand saw.  Carter and I stayed at home, read Christmas books, played with his new birthday toys, and then I held Carter during his nap because every time I laid him down he sat up in his crib and cried.  I figured I have a short few snuggle naps left and I'm going to enjoy them while I still can.

Jeremy's driveway.
Our backyard.
While Carter played I started wrapping his Christmas presents.  One of the perks of him being so young is that he has no idea.  We've actually read all of the books I got him for Christmas because I was so excited when they arrived (I ordered them from a Scholastic book order at his daycare).  At Carter's birthday party I noticed he had a hard time ripping wrapping paper, but had no trouble with tissue paper so I decided to wrap his Christmas presents in tissue paper.  I used tissue paper from presents my students gave me.  Even though Carter won't know the difference, I used 4 layers of tissue paper on each present to make sure he can't see through the paper.  I'm hoping Carter enjoys opening his presents and doesn't get too distracted trying to eat tissue paper.  We'll see how that goes!

Playing with his chair from Great Aunt Tina.

We also had fun going through the presents I received from my students.  I felt so loved with all the cookies, candy, gift cards, and homemade gifts I received.  Although I feel loved every day as I get sweet hugs and smiles.  Carter loved a scarf I was given that had sparkles in the yarn.  Ty put the scarf on Harper and she wore it for quite a while.  One student gave me a cute canister filled with cookies.  It had the message "Write on Me" on the side because it worked as a dry erase board.  I laughed so hard when I walked into the room to see Ty had written "no" on the canister.
Wearing my scarf.
Ty's contradiction since he did in fact write on the canister.
Today I finally decorated our Christmas tree.  We have 4 Christmas containers, 2 of which we could get to and 2 we couldn't.  Ty dug out the other 2 containers for me today and one of the containers had our ornaments in it.  We have 3 different star toppers for our tree and neither of us like any of them.  I came up with the idea to have Carter decorate a star topper for our tree every year.  We'll date the stars and keep them year after year.  When he gets older and no longer thinks it's cool to make tree toppers, we can pull out old ones to decorate and reminisce.  I'm pretty excited to start the tradition tomorrow!  I'm also excited for my parents and brother to arrive tomorrow.  We are going to visit the Christmas lights again since Thomas didn't get to see them last time.  We also plan to drive by a house where they've set their Christmas lights to music and have 8 songs worth of music and light displays to go with it!!!!
I hope you are enjoying the holiday season as much as we are!

Thurday Randoms

Whew, it's already Thursday and when I leave school at night in my mind it's already the next day.  So yay for Friday!  This week has been crazy busy.  Monday after school I co-led a training and was home late.  Tuesday I had a dinner for my work Secret Santa reveal.  Yesterday we did some shopping.  With all that was going on and wanting to post about Carter's birthday when it was fresh on my mind, there wasn't much time leftover for all my other chores.  Which left me addressing half the Christmas cards I hadn't finished yet, doing laundry, making cards for Carter's teachers (thankfully Ty picked up the gift cards), and making cookies to take to work.  Ty is out buying the ingredients for me so I can type up a quick post.  Yep, I'm lucky and I know it!

Today at school we had our annual Holiday Sing where all 1,000 students pack into the gym and sing Christmas, Hannukah, and Kwanza songs.  Looking across the sea of students and watching my precious class my face hurt from smiling.  They are all just so unique and precious!  I pictured little Carter man some day sitting on that gym floor, singing his little heart out, and flailing his arms to the movements that go along with the words.  Did my heart good!
Crawling over Uncie Tommy to get to the computer over the weekend.

We went to see the Christmas lights on Sunday evening.  Carter loved them!

Ty just got home with the ingredients and it sounds like he's starting the cookies for me (amazing)!  Which means I better dash away to take over!  Here comes picture overload since I've only posted birthday pictures so far this week.

He looks so big!  Ty dressed him in his Thanksgiving outfit which made me giggle!

Fall Reading

This summer while Carter and I participated in the summer reading program, I kept a list of our favorite books.  I enjoyed having a list of all the best books we read so I decided to make a fall reading list as well.  We love our weekly trips to the library and I get so excited when I find a new gem to add to our list.  Books of particular interest to me are about becoming a big brother or sister.  I want to have a list of great books compiled for when Carter is going to be a big brother.  Since the official start of winner is in just a few days, I figured today was a good day to post my fall list.

Our Top Fall Reading Choices
  •  A Good Day by Kevin Henkes, I LOVE Kevin Henkes and hadn't read this book yet.  It teaches such a great lesson that even if something bad or disappointing happens, you can end up having a good day.
  • Thank You Bear by Greg Foley, This book would be a great one for discussing that some people won't appreciate things you consider to be great.  Not everyone's opinion matters.  Bear is such a cute character and there are more books with him.
  • Will It Be a Baby Brother? by Eve Bunting, Bunting is such a great author!  This book is so sweet.  The boy really wants a brother.  He ends up with a sister and realizes that she's just what he wanted all along.
  •  RRRALPH by Lois Ehlert, Such an adorable book!  I love how the dog is making noises a dog would actually make, but they make sense with what the dog is being asked.
  • Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh, This is a fun book to read when learning about what colors are made when you mix colors.  I picture reading this book with Carter and then letting him mix paints to try it out.
  • Baby Loves by William Lach, This book uses the art of Mary Cassatt to create an easy reader.  It is a great way to introduce children to art and is also an easy enough read they can use the pictures and the repetition to read or help read the book.
  • Sing by Joe Raposo and Tom Lichtenheld, The book is a song written by Raposo illustrated by Lichtenheld.  I'm discovering how much I like Lichtenheld, he has some adorable books!  The song is so sweet and Carter loved it.  The book came with a CD which helped me figure out the tune to the song because I can't sing by looking at sheet music for the life of me.  I was lucky to be successful playing the clarinet using sheet music, I don't push it by trying to figure out a pitch for my voice using it!
  • Goodnight Goon by Michael Rex, Labeled a petrifying parody this book is a Halloween version of Goodnight Moon.  It is spooky and fun, but not scary.  I read this one to Carter multiple times just because I liked it so much.
  • Thumb Love by Elise Primavera, I waffled back and forth with this book.  It was kind of cute but really strange in some parts.  I was weirded out by the conversations the child had with her thumb.  Obviously I picked it up because of my little thumb sucker.  I want to keep this book on a list just in case we have trouble getting Carter to stop sucking his thumb.  I don't want to kick myself that I didn't save the name of this book.  I have a sneaking suspicion there may be more appropriate books, but just in case there aren't I'm saving it.

Carter's Smash Cake Photo Shoot

When Ty made the smash cake for Carter's party he was able to make 3 smaller cakes with the batter.  Carter had one at his birthday party and then we saved one for his smash cake photo shoot.  I was so excited for the diaper and tie only!  So excited that I couldn't wait and we went for it on Sunday afternoon.  It was hilarious.  Since he'd been fully clothed and in a high chair at his party, giving him a cake with no shoes while sitting on the floor was a totally different ball game.  He initially crawled to the cake and then later crawled away from it.  My favorite moment was when he lifted his leg and kicked the cake with the heel of his foot.  Baby boy is going to be a soccer player one day!  I'm loving all the pictures and I'm sure you will, too!  Get ready for picture overload!
Crawling to the cake!

Hmm, now what's in here?!!?
