We Can't Catch a Break Around Here

After getting called to pick Carter up, due to him running a temperature, half-way through the day last Monday (well, 40 minutes from a half-day so I was charged a full day even though I'd been at work for over 3 hours) his grammy came to watch him Tuesday through Thursday so he could recover.  He went back to daycare on Friday and was back to normal for the weekend.  Then he woke up Sunday morning with the inside corner of his left eye all red and swollen.  He wasn't running a temperature and was acting normal other than the puffy eye.  I decided to give him some Tylenol for the inflammation only to look over after giving him the correct dosage for Tylenol to notice I had picked up Ibuprofen by mistake.  So I had given him over double the recommended amount of Ibuprofen.  Ty's grandma wasn't worried, so I figured I didn't need to worry either, but I couldn't help it.  I decided to call Poison Control just to be on the safe side and they told me it was fine, to just make sure he drank plenty of fluids.  Crisis averted!
Poor buddy's eye was so swollen!

With Carter being sick we haven't been getting as much sleep as we'd like around here.  Last week he was waking up 3-4 times at night because he just didn't feel good.  Friday night he was down to only waking up once and then coming to bed with us around 4 am.  Saturday night he slept until 5 am so I brought him to bed with us for an hour.  Sunday night he was up during the middle of the night again.  We took his temperature Monday morning and it was in the low 100's.  His eye was still swollen, but not too bad.  Since his temperature was 100.3 and he can't go to daycare if it's 100.4 or above I stayed home with him, leaving me just 2 or 3 sick days for the remainder of the year.  I hope the month of May is kinder to my Carter man than the month of April has been!  Carter woke up still running a temperature this morning so daddy stayed home with him today.
Snuggles with my poor, sick baby!

I'm looking forward to next year when I no longer have to worry about sick days.  When I don't have to fret about whether to send him with a 100 degree temp or not because I'm almost out of sick days.  When I don't have to work on typing up lesson plans for a substitute while Carter cries and clings to me, desperately wanting rocked and more attention because he doesn't feel well.  When I won't have to go to work and leave him at home with someone else.  While Ty and my mom are both amazing caregivers and I know Carter is just as well off with them home as he is with me, there is something about leaving your sick baby that is just heart wrenching.  Knowing my baby is sick and not being the one to soothe him and rock him to sleep leaves me feeling sad all day long.  Being home with a sick baby is definitely sad, no one wants their baby to be sick.  But being away from your baby when he/she is sick is so much worse!  Only 6 and a half weeks left, but who's counting?

Spring and Almost Summer

This weekend while Gigi and Papa visited we had really warm weather.  Both Saturday and Sunday the high reached into the 80's.  I was stoked to pull out the water table we picked up at a garage sale a few weekends ago.  I washed it up and brought some toys out for him to play with at the table.  He had a blast and ended up completely soaked.  I was cracking up because he kept hiking one leg up attempting to climb into the water.  He never made it on top of the table, thank goodness!

Gigi snapped a picture of us playing.  It was a nice treat to find on my camera since there aren't many pictures of me with Carter.

Sunday after Gigi and Papa left and daddy went on a run we headed outside with some sidewalk chalk.  We'd tried sidewalk chalk before, but Carter wasn't interested in doing much other than slapping the pieces of chalk together.  Sunday he drew his first picture with sidewalk chalk and I was a super proud momma.  He picked out green and a turqouise-ish color and carried them around the entire time we were outside.  He would stop, squat, and color while on the concrete.  At one point he got on his tractor and put the 2 pieces of chalk in the steering wheel.

Harper rolled in cat poop while we were playing outside so I decided to give her a bath with a hose.  No way was I letting her in the house without one and I wasn't sure how long it would be until Ty got home.  At first Carter thought it was hilarious and stood laughing at Harper the whole time.  Then a soaking wet Harper (who I had on a leash, so Carter was just too close) ran over to him and rubbed on his back in an attempt to get dry.  After that he didn't think it was funny and wanted me to hold him.  So I held him most of the time which made the task even more difficult.  Luckily I got Harper decently clean.  Not as clean as I would have liked, but at least she wasn't streaked in poop.  After all that work I decided to put Carter in the stroller and take Harper on a walk rather than drying her off.  Ty drove by as we were walking so we headed back home and met him to walk some more together.

We also pulled out Easter decorations this weekend, a little late, but better late than never!  Carter had a lot of fun playing with the eggs and could even open them on his own.  I showed him to press in on the middle and it would pop open.  He did even better after that.  For snack time I put his snack inside Easter eggs and he really enjoyed opening the eggs to see what snack was inside.  At one point he opened an egg and didn't want what was inside so he just picked up a different egg and tried it.

We are loving the warm weather and all the great outdoor activities it's providing.  I love spring and of course summer, but I'm definitely not ready for the 100+ degree weather that is awaiting us.  Running in the 80 degree heat has seemed so hot to me lately!  I'm down to the last 7 weeks until summer which means my days as a working momma are numbered and I couldn't be happier!

Papa and Gigi Come to Visit

This weekend Ty's grandparents, Carter's Gigi and Papa, came to visit.  Ty's grandpa (who made Carter's crib, see here) made a bed for Ty and my room.  So they came to bring it down and of course to see Carter!  Friday evening they enjoyed playing and snuggling with Carter before he went to bed and then Jeremy came over to help unload the bed and carry it into our bedroom.  I knew we were going to add a lot of storage space with the drawers Ty's grandpa made for the bed, but I was so excited once the bed was all together!  I couldn't wait to start stuffing the drawers full of stuff.  We are quickly running out of storage around here!

The foot of the bed.  Our quilt was a wedding present from Ty's Grandma, Carter's Gigi.
One of the sliders in the drawer got broken during the move into our bedroom, that's why the drawer is hanging out.

Papa and Gigi treated us to IHOP for breakfast both mornings.  I ordered Carter a fruit cup on Saturday and all he wanted was the hash browns, sausage, and waffles off our plates.  On Sunday we ordered him hash browns and sausage since he'd liked them so much the day before.  Then all he wanted was the fruit off his Gigi's plate.  Little man is such a little scavenger, he never wants his own food!
Playing while we waited for food at IHOP.
Leaving IHOP in matching colored shirts.

We had great weather all weekend so we spent a decent amount of time playing outside.  It got up to 80 degrees on Saturday so I got out Carter's water table we got at a garage sale for $10.  He enjoyed playing with it, but also loved climbing up in chairs.  One set of chairs is short enough he can easily climb up on his own.  The other set is too tall for him to do it on his own.  Papa would put a hand out for Carter to put his foot in and push off of.  It was enough help he was able to make it into the chair.

Carter enjoyed practicing his shapes with Papa and Gigi.  He played with his shape sorter a lot.  Gigi would sit with him, tell him the names of the shapes, and help him locate the hole to push his shape through.  Before he was pretty good with circle, but this weekend he did really well with all of the shapes.  Although he did find the triangle and star to be difficult enough most times he just flipped the toy back over without even attempting them!  We clapped for him when he got a shape in the right hole so many times he started clapping for himself right after he put the shape in.

Carter definitely enjoyed his time with Papa and Gigi and was sad to see them go.  He was pampered all weekend with treats (animal crackers), snuggles (Gigi even rocked him to sleep for one of his naps), and loads of attention.  We look forward to seeing them again in a couple of weeks when we make a trip back to Ty's hometown to visit family.

Sad to See Grammy Go

Carter enjoyed another day at home with his grammy today.  Thanks to grammy I was able to sleep in.  Carter woke up at 5:20 so Ty brought him to bed.  We then slept until 6:45 when Carter decided to sit up in bed.  Since I didn't have to drop Carter off at daycare I was able to leave the house 30 minutes later than usual so I had extra play time with him in the morning.  He looked so adorable in his new overalls and he even read me a book.

Sweet baby napping.
Cutest position ever!

Grammy took Carter to the zoo after lunch.  It sounded like they had a blast.  Carter rode the carousel for the first time and in the picture looked a bit frightened.  There was a mishap with a water bottle and Carter ended up fairly soaked with water and there was a puddle of water in his stroller.  It looked as though Carter's favorite animals on this trip were the meerkats.  It's interesting to see, and in this case hear, how Carter's preferences change with each trip.
New sunglasses grammy bought at the zoo gift shop.
Looking a bit unsure about the carousel.
Soaking wet baby!
Watching the meerkats!

After 3 days of sleeping in, leaving for work late, receiving pictures of Carter throughout the day, and knowing Carter was getting one-on-one attention, it was sad to see grammy leave this evening.  I sure will miss hearing the ding of my phone and being greeted with a picture of Carter upon checking my phone.  I'm sure Carter will also be disappointed.  At one point this evening my mom went out to the car and Carter cried by the door until she returned.
More pictures grammy sent me during the day.
